Overview 

Serialized assets are those that when received are assigned a serial number. The serial number is used to identify the asset when it is sold. There must be a unique serial number for each serialized product that is sold. This article provides information on how to create a unique serial number on a returned serialized inventory product. This will allow the product to be re-sold using its unique original serial number. 

Return a Serialized Inventory Sale

1. To return the serialized product back into inventory, create an Inbound Inventory Movement for the product, warehouse, and location for returning the inventory goods. 
   1. Access the Inventory Quantity Available, and select a list view (other than the Recently Viewed list view). Then, select an Inventory Quantity Available Name. 
   2. Click the Inventory Movements tab. Then, from the Inbound Inventory Movements related list, click New. The New Inbound Inventory Movement dialog box displays.
   3. Complete the required fields, which display with a red asterisk (*). This includes the return Quantity, selecting Accounting as the Type, and the Movement Date. Include additional fields as indicated in the sample screen below (Unit Cost, include the Debit and Credit GL Accounts, and the Serial Number for the return).
      Note: Since this is a serialized product that is being returned, be sure to include the original serial number along with a suffix such as -R, which will indicate this is a “Return” item.
      
      
      
      
   4. Click Save. The newly added Inbound Inventory Movement displays with the serial number to indicate a returned item.

2. From the Inventory Quantity Available screen, scroll to the Sales Order Inventory Movements related list. Then, select the Sale Order Inventory Movement that has the original serial number assigned to it.

3. Edit the Serial Number to include the same suffix that was used on the Inbound Inventory Movement to indicate this is a returned item.

4. Click Save.
   Note: When this product is ready to be re-sold, the original serial number is now available to be used on the Sales Order.
