    Sub type 1 and Sub type 2 are used to group GL Accounts when using AS to generate the standard OOTB financial statements. You "group" by setting the sub type designations on each specific GL Account.

    GL Account Grouping (GLAG) is used to group GL Accounts when designing custom financial statements. It groups like you would traditionally think....you select the GL accounts to group in that GLAG container.

    Sub types are not ever used on custom financial statements and GLAGs are not ever used on standard OOTB financial statements.

    Why the difference? No good reason...how the product developed piecemeal over the years. It is confusing. It has been asked and is expected that AS will be redoing the whole financial statement reporting functionality to get it on par with other accounting packages. I believe there is several feature requests outstanding regarding that.
